Public Act: 95-0671
Effective Date: January 1, 2008

SB 937 changes from 5th to 6th grade when students must have their school health examinations.  Effective Date August 24, 2007.
The intent of the legislation was to address the human papillomavirus (HPV) issue. Earlier versions of the bill would have required all female students to have the HPV vaccine before entering school in the 6th grade; this bill does not contain such a requirement. It does, however, require all health insurance plans to cover the vaccination for HPV and requires the Department of Public Health to establish a program that pays for the HPV vaccination for girls under age 18 in families that do not have other insurance coverage. Additionally, the bill requires the Department of Public Health to provide all female students who are entering the 6th grade, and their parents or legal guardians, written information about the link between HPV and cervical cancer and the availability of an HPV vaccine. Effective Date: August 24, 2007

·* If your child has any health or medical concerns, please discuss them with us so that we can develop a plan of care. Our goal is to keep your child in good health.

·* Please, always have contact phone numbers available so that the school can reach you in case of an emergency.

·* Call the school to let us know when your child is ill and will not be at school.  Please let school know about symptoms.  We would like to be proactive in dealing with illnesses which the children present with.

*Vision and hearing screening is done for all students during the first few weeks of school. If your child has difficulty seeing or hearing during the initial screening, a second screening will be done in approximately 2 weeks. If the problem is confirmed during the second screening, a letter will be sent to you with information for your eye doctor or health care provider for more definitive testing. Please have this referral information completed and returned to school so that we can follow through with vision or hearing recommendations.

Remember how important good vision and hearing is in your child’s ability to learn!

Please notify the nurse if financial assistance is needed.
